Film Review Sample: In Bruges
A 2008 drama by Martin McDonagh In Bruges may well not become your chosen film of times, but will definitely allow you to think over your life yet again. This film got its IMDB rating of 8 out of 10 for an outstanding performance of actors and, also, for a dynamic story unfolding in a quiet, even boring, European town.
A viewer catches up with two professional killers Ray (Colin Farrel) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) when they are sent by their boss Harry (Ralph Finnes) to the small town of Bruges to lay low for some time. Soon both hit men learn that their main job is here now in Bruges.
The movie traditionally features a love story, conflict of generations, some humor and much more, contrasting with the heavy and depressive atmosphere of Bruges. The director’s idea, brilliantly fulfilled in the operators’ work, shows the whole story in gray color. The dark environments are a perfect place to think of life and death, crime and punishment – classic philosophical motives that develop into a red line in the film. Rays’ evolution from the person willing to commit a suicide to the man who's clinging for a lifetime, teaches you that everyone deserves a second chance.
None the less, the main idea, hidden involving the decorations and dialogs, really is easy but yet still relevant for all – you will find no bad or good people; everybody else has something good and bad in themselves. Ergo, wise, kind and selfless Ken remains a killer; bad and somewhat mad Harry is just a family guy and a person of his word. The gray is not just in buildings and other decorations; people themselves are gray, having their particular positives and negatives. This made me think about my entire life, every single thing I’ve done, some of them were good, some were bad and those things define me as an individual. That is why you will find different colors in me and no matter how I shall mix them they will still make gray at the end.
The story leaves you uncertain about Rays’ destiny. His future is in both hands; actually your future is too. There is always a location for a change and you also are the someone to decide whether you should give yourself another chance or not. Absolutely, worth watching!
